Child neglect and abuse are both serious issues that not many people advocate about. Across the globe, child neglect has social and economic impacts. Child neglect and abuse is a serious public health issue locally and globally. In many countries , such comprehensive data may not be available due the lack of structured child neglect and abuse (CAN) surveillance and responsive system (“Child protection : A Global Responsibility.N.p.,n.d.web.). This means due to the lack of access to CAN resources , child neglect in many countries isn’t being reported..Any selection of prevention and response programs will have the potential to reduce child maltreatment. Given the substantial economic burden of child maltreatment, the benefits of prevention will most likely outweigh the costs for effective programs.Economically child neglect and abuse may cause an issue that leads the community into a financial state of instability. The financial costs for victims and society are substantial. A recent CDC study, The Economic Burden of Child Maltreatment in the United States and Implications for Prevention, found the total lifetime estimated financial costs associated with just one year of confirmed cases of child maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and neglect) is approximately $124 billion. Therefore throughout the country the economy will be financially unstable because the cost of child maltreatment increases when the number of victims increase.
