Stop Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) is a school-based program designed to provide child abuse prevention and safety information to school children. Staff members and trained volunteers teach youth about personal safety including inappropriate touching, Internet safety, and bullying. The program is free to area schools and it is a required part of the curriculum in the Huntsville, Madison and Madison County school systems for grades 3, 5 and 7. SCAN programs are also presented to private schools and preschools upon request. SCAN offers a program for children in kindergarten and first grade for a fee as well.
There are multiple organizations throughout the world that help advocate for child neglect. No one wants to witness child neglect. Every child has a right to a safe childhood that is free from violence /negativity. Reactions from abuse vary and abuse also affects each child differently. Abuse can create developmental and psychological issues. These issues will have a large impact on how an adolescent lives his/ her life. The brain develops at an incredible pace during the early developmental stages of infancy and childhood. Studies about early childhood development indicate that the brain develops in response to experiences with caregivers, family and the community, and that its development is directly linked to the quality and quantity of those experiences. Meeting a child’s needs during these early stages creates emotional stability and security that is needed for healthy brain development. Repeated exposure to stressful events can affect the brain’s stress response, making it more reactive and less adaptive (Effects of Child Abuse and Neglect. N.p., n.d. Web). This means that with time a child may react as if danger is always present in their environment regardless of what the presenting situation is. The child will have already adapted to the environment they are in and this may cause the psychological effects the child will have to deal with.
